ALAMEDA,Authentic Michael Thomas Jersey, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders released pass rusher Aldon Smith on Monday after his latest run-in with the law.

The Raiders retained Smith's contractual rights even as he spent the past two seasons on the NFL's suspended list. But the team decided finally to cut ties one day after San Francisco police said authorities were searching for Smith in connection with a domestic violence allegation.

San Francisco police said Monday an arrest warrant has been obtained for Smith stemming from allegations that Smith assaulted a woman on Saturday night. Smith left before police arrived to respond to the 911 call and authorities are working with Smith's attorney to arrange a time for him to surrender.

Smith is facing misdemeanor charges of willful infliction of corporal injury, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury,Womens Michael Thomas Jersey, false imprisonment and vandalism,Authentic Lawrence Taylor Jersey, according to Sgt. Michael Andraychak.

Smith has been on the suspended list since November 2015 for violating the NFL's policy on substance abuse. The Raiders had signed Smith to a two-year contract before the 2016 season,Womens Lawrence Taylor Jersey, but he never was cleared by the league to return from suspension.

Smith was one of the league's top pass rushers before off-field problems derailed his career. He set an NFL record with 33? sacks his first two seasons after being drafted in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2011.

He helped the Niners make it to the NFC title game as a rookie and the Super Bowl the following year. But the off-field issues started mounting the following season when he missed five games to undergo treatment at an inpatient facility following a DUI arrest.

Smith was then suspended the first nine games in 2014 while serving an NFL suspension for violations of the league's substance abuse and personal conduct policies. San Francisco then released him in August 2015 after another drunken driving charge — his fifth arrest in three years.

He signed with Oakland just before the start of the 2015 season and had 3? sacks in nine games before being suspended again for at least one year.

Smith applied for reinstatement to the NFL in 2016,Authentic Odell Beckham Jr Jersey, but that decision was initially deferred until the offseason and he never was granted reinstatement.

Smith has played 59 games over five seasons in the NFL with 47? sacks and one first-team All-Pro honor in 2012.

A natural break in the schedule has presented an opportunity to discuss the bigger-picture items on the agenda for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

More specifically, and since beyond, what’s earned a considerable share of the discourse over the last few days has been the looming executive crunch (if you will) that faces the crowded boardroom responsible for building the organization back to, respectability.

As is customary with these new Leafs, the public is left to work with incomplete information as it glances toward the future. But as we’re led to believe, Lou Lamoriello, will see his contract, the man currently sitting in the general manager’s chair (and at least considered second-in-command in terms of influence behind team president Brendan Shanahan), as it was agreed upon, reach its expiration sooner than later once the season has ended.

(It is believed that his current deal does include a natural progression to an advisory role, however, of sorts. Whether he remains in the office or not, decisions on the current arrangement within the managerial hierarchy are indeed imminent.)

It’s entirely possible that Shanahan has already charted out the path, and perhaps even handed the mandate down to Lamoriello and the remaining managerial prongs, Kyle Dubas and Mark Hunter.

It’s also entirely possible that he, like the rest of us,adida Taylor Hall jersey, isn’t sure just yet on how this will sort out.

Regardless, there’s one course of action that seems to make the most sense for the immediate future — the status quo. And a reminder of why Lamoriello was brought aboard in the first place provides the most sensible rationale.

Lamoriello’s value to the Maple Leafs when the organization made the surprise decision to rescue him from his unwanted role with the New Jersey Devils was as a table-setter for the 31-year-old Dubas. He would use his 30 years of executive experience and relationships forged across NHL circles to carry out the consensuses from the managerial nucleus in Toronto. This, adidas Cory Schneider jersey, while showing Dubas the managerial ropes.

It’s proven to be quite astute.

Though the arrangement has resulted in some variable organizational behaviour (an apparent change in draft strategy, for one),authentic Travis Hamonic jersey, so far, adidas Ryan McDonagh jersey, all together, the group has pushed the right buttons.

Toronto jumped from 30th to 14th in the standings last season, and this year sit sixth in the overall table. And despite the difficult road, the Maple Leafs are certainly in a position to make a meaningful postseason run just two years after winning the rights to the No. 1 pick from the pole position at the draft lottery.

All that’s happened since Lamoriello’s arrival (and with the wreckage before that), however, is light lifting compared to the work that needs to be accomplished in that boardroom this summer.

Lamoriello has been there to complete the teardown, make contracts go bye-bye, sign big-money free-agent deals and bolster postseason rosters at the deadline. What he hasn’t done is negotiate a long-term contract out of entry level with the face of the franchise.

Let alone three.

Lamoriello has built a reputation in the NHL as a tough, or significantly diminish the leverage he brings by shifting him to a lesser role, no-nonsense negotiator. Why would the Maple Leafs waste that expertise, before the organization signs the three contracts that will ultimately establish the ceiling for the most promising generation of Maple Leafs hockey in a lifetime?

The work toward signing long-term agreements with Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner needs to begin the moment the Maple Leafs’ postseason run ends. It should be managed in concert — just as it all has for the last 32 months.

If at any point they needed a team or, obscurity with regard to role, authentic Cory Schneider jersey, better yet, it’s now.

What sense does it make to rush to promote Dubas (an executive with less time on this planet than Lamoriello has years experience managing an NHL franchise) or Hunter (a proficient scout, but one with very limited experience in contract negotiation) and make their first order of business to sign the most important contracts in the club’s 101-year history?

What’s more, why have them answer for these negotiations when Lamoriello is nothing if not an expert at getting things accomplished in silence, and a master of muzzling the media?

Lamoriello was always a stopgap solution, authentic John Tavares jersey, but he was brought in to do a specific job and those duties have not been fully carried out just yet. So his contract expires? If Lamoriello has proven anything in his time with the Maple Leafs it’s that lines can be blurred.

Until Matthews, authentic Taylor Hall jersey,Nylander and (to a lesser extent) Marner are signed, and see either Dubas, adidas John Tavares jersey, it would be a mistake to make the 75-year-old forfeit his position one rung below Shanahan, adidas Travis Hamonic jersey, Hunter, authentic Ryan McDonagh jersey, or any other candidate fill the vacancy.

What problems arise following Lamoriello’s tenure — whether it’s Lou’s unhappiness with a lesser role, feelings of resentment lower on the ladder, or a mass executive exodus altogether — will pale in comparison to ones brought on by missteps in negotiations this summer.

Jerry Jones has agreed to pay the NFL more than $2 million in legal fees resulting from two disputes the Dallas Cowboys owner had with the league,Authentic Odell Beckham Jr Jersey, a person with direct knowledge of the settlement tells The Associated Press.

The amount to be paid was resolved Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the NFL did not announce details.

Commissioner Roger Goodell held an appeal hearing with Jones on Monday. That came a few days after Goodell assessed the financial penalties for Jones' lawsuit to overturn the suspension of Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott,Womens Odell Beckham Jr Jersey,  and for a lawsuit Jones threatened to stop Goodell's newly approved contract.

Many owners were consulted on seeking restitution, Authentic Lawrence Taylor Jersey, including members of the finance committee. Some finance committee members are on the compensation committee that was at the center of what became a legal back-and-forth over Goodell's deal.

The restitution is rooted in a 1997 resolution that states owners can seek repayment for legal fees if a fellow owner is responsible for getting them involved in legal action.

which came after Elliott was suspended over domestic violence allegations,Womens Michael Thomas Jersey,Jones' attempt to derail Goodell's extension, led to a volley of threatening letters from lawyers for both sides.

Jones said after the owners meetings in December that he got what he wanted with an agreement to consider changes to the power of the commissioner's role through the league's constitution. Jones denied that his attempt to scuttle the contract was tied to Elliott's suspension,After eventually relenting,Authentic Michael Thomas Jersey, but made repeated references to Goodell's power to punish players.

Jones and the Cowboys were supportive of Elliott's lawsuit,Womens Lawrence Taylor Jersey, which was led by the players' union and resulted in federal court hearings in three states over a span of two months. The suit eventually failed and Elliott served the suspension.

Los Angeles (AFP) - The National Football League launched an investigation Thursday after a top draft prospect revealed he had been quizzed about his sexuality by team representatives during last week's scouting combine.

Former Louisiana State University running back Derrius Guice told Sirius XM radio he had been subjected to questions about his private life and baited with lurid allegations about his mother.

The 20-year-old said he believed the questions were a test intended to see how he would respond under pressure.

"It was pretty crazy,Authentic John Ross Jersey," Guice said. "Some people are really trying to get in your head and test your reaction.

"I go in one room,Womens A.J. Green Jersey, and a team will ask me 'do I like men,Womens DeShone Kizer Jersey,' just to see my reaction. I go in another room, I heard your mom sells herself. How do you feel about that?'", Authentic Jim Brown Jersey, they'll try to bring up one of my family members or something and tell me, 'Hey

The revelations drew a stern response from the NFL on Thursday,Womens John Ross Jersey, which said it had opened an investigation into the issue.

"A question such as that is completely inappropriate and wholly contrary to league workplace policies,Authentic DeShone Kizer Jersey," the league said.

"The NFL and its clubs are committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all employees in a manner that is consistent with our commitment to diversity and inclusion,Womens Jim Brown Jersey, state and federal laws and the CBA. We are looking into the matter."

The NFL's scouting combine brings together the top prospects in the draft,Authentic Barry Sanders Jersey, offering them a platform to showcase their athletic skills before team scouts.

Teams also get the opportunity to speak to players to evaluate their character -- and intrusive questioning is sometimes used to see how players respond.

The NFL Players Association meanwhile said the team representatives who spoke to Guice should be barred from future scouting combines as a penalty.

"Find out what team did it and ban them from the Combine,Womens Barry Sanders Jersey," NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said.

"The question is inappropriate. Questions along these lines are always inappropriate."

Controversy over inappropriate questions put to draft prospects has flared before.

In 2016, now New York Giants cornerback Eli Apple said he was asked if he was gay during a pre-draft interview with Atlanta Falcons assistant coach Marquand Manuel.

Manuel later issued an apology after the NFL deemed the question "disappointing and clearly inappropriate."

In 2010, Authentic A.J. Green Jersey,Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant was asked by then-Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland whether his mother was a prostitute.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Le'Veon Bell keeps saying he wants to stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers keep saying they want to keep one of the NFL's best running backs in the fold for years to come.

They have until July 16 to make it happen.

The Steelers placed the exclusive rights franchise tag on the two-time All-Pro for a second straight spring on Tuesday,Womens Adam Thielen Jersey, putting Bell's long-term status with the club up in the air.

but failed to do so by Tuesday's deadline for teams to use the franchise tag.,Bell,Womens Ryan Kerrigan Jersey,  a two-time All Pro, accounted for 1,946 total yards and 11 touchdowns for the AFC North champions in 2017. Both Bell and Steelers management said after the season they hoped to get a contract extension done quickly

Bell is scheduled to make $14.54 million in 2018 if he signs the franchise tender and the two sides are unable to reach an agreement on a new deal. He skipped offseason workouts and training camp last summer before signing the tender on the eve of the regular season. The absence led to a sluggish start, though he was an indispensable part of Pittsburgh's offense once again,Womens Golden Tate III Jersey, breaking his own club record by catching 85 passes.

The 25-year-old made the 2017 All-Pro team at the "flex" position,Womens Calais Campbell Jersey, one he considered a tribute to his versatility. Bell said repeatedly over the past year he believes he's different than other backs in the league and wants to be paid accordingly. He is arguably the best receiving back in the NFL and he's averaged nearly 25 touches a game in five seasons, Authentic Adam Thielen Jersey, though he's only been healthy at the end of the year twice. Bell has twice been suspended by the NFL for violations of the substance abuse policy.

Bell turned down a long-term deal with the Steelers last summer and told ESPN in January he would consider retiring if the Steelers used the franchise tag on him again. He backtracked a bit during the Pro Bowl when he said he believed a new contract was in the works. It was a sentiment echoed by both Steelers president Art Rooney II and general manager Kevin Colbert early in the offseason.

Pittsburgh's depth behind Bell is thin. James Conner carried the ball 32 times during his rookie season and the club signed Stevan Ridley at the end of the regular season as insurance. Bell tweeted Monday that regardless of the circumstances he wants to remain with the Steelers.

and I want nothing more than to finish the rest of my career in Pitt!",Authentic Golden Tate III Jersey,"Pittsburgh: the city that took in a 21-year old kid from small-town Ohio, the city I battled thru adversity in, Authentic Calais Campbell Jersey, the city that I became a man in,Authentic Ryan Kerrigan Jersey," Bell tweeted. The Anaheim Ducks come in on a two-game losing streak and the St. Louis Blues enter after a convincing win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

but the Stars scored two power-play goals in the third period. Ryan Miller stopped 35 shots for Anaheim.,Anaheim (34-23-12) lost 2-1 on Friday evening in Dallas. The Ducks gained the early lead

the Ducks had won three of four games and gained standings points in four consecutive games.,The team is 6-3-1 in the last 10 games. Before the two recent losses

Before the offensive outburst, authentic Taylor Hall jersey, the Blues registered 14 goals in 10 games while getting shut out three times. Against the Kings, adidas Travis Hamonic jersey, 14 Blues players had points, led by Jaden Schwartz with a goal and two assists.

None of the Blues' seven goals against the Kings came with a man advantage. The St. Louis power play ranks 29th in the NHL.

"It takes a toll on them, adidas John Tavares jersey, not scoring goals, adidas Ryan McDonagh jersey," Allen said. "I don't know when the last time would have been for a game like that. Maybe not (since) the first 10, and we needed one of those games, 15 games of the year. I think it gave us a good boost."

Blues coach Mike Yeo said, "When you can score some goals, what you hope now is that some guys can build some confidence off of that and carry some momentum into our next one. We know the next one is going to be a real tough challenge."

leading scorer Rickard Rakell (30-29-59) has 11 points in the past six games (eight goals). He assisted on the Ducks' goal against the Stars. Ryan Getzlaf was the scorer.,For Anaheim

Getzlaf is also on fire offensively. He is second on the team in scoring with 50 points (10 goals) despite playing 20 fewer games than Rakell because of injury or illness.

In seven of Getzlaf's last eight games, adidas Cory Schneider jersey,  he has points (three goals), including a four-point effort (one goal) against Edmonton on Feb. 25. He missed the team's first game in March against Columbus with the flu.

Getzlaf summarized the game against Dallas. "I thought we did a good job of holding our own. (The) goaltender made some saves when we needed him to; he kept us right in the game. Special teams was the difference."

The Ducks had been on a run of 25 straight penalty kills until they allowed goals on both Stars' power plays.

Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle commented, "Well, adida Taylor Hall jersey, again that is the difference in the game. They score two power-play goals, authentic Cory Schneider jersey, one to get even and the other one to win the hockey game for them. And what did we do? We went 0-3 in the game. Special teams -- we lost the battle; they won the hockey game with it."

a rotation Carlyle has used lately.,authentic Travis Hamonic jersey,Lineup changes anticipated for Anaheim include the swap of defensemen Francois Beauchemin for Kevin Bieksa

Carlyle also has five players who battle for spots on the fourth line, authentic John Tavares jersey, including Olympic bronze medalist Chris Kelly, authentic Ryan McDonagh jersey, who joined the team after competing in Olympic men's hockey in South Korea.

The Blues will likely stick with the reunited first line of Schwartz, Brayden Schenn, and Vladimir Tarasenko. The trio produced five points against the Kings.

"Part of putting those three back together was giving them the opportunity and the ability to make some plays that we saw them make," Yeo said, "and we also felt that it would sort of sharpen the focus and the mindset of the other players."

St. Louis has two players with more than 50 points. Tarasenko's 27 goals and 58 points pace the team.

but his last goal came in Dallas in mid-February. Tarasenko has points in six of the last 10 games.,Schenn trails by a point (24-33-57) but has been cold lately. He has points in two of his last eight games

St. Louis sent four players to AHL San Antonio and Chicago on Saturday. The Blues recalled defenseman Chris Butler from San Antonio.

Monday's game marks the start of a four-game homestand. The Blues are at the end of a four-game road trip. They play Colorado at home on Thursday.,For the Ducks

Monday is the first day NFL teams can begin free agent negotiations,Womens Lawrence Taylor Jersey, and Wednesday is the first day free agents can sign new contracts. The team with the most cap space in the NFL isn’t planning to waste any time next week.

Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan promised that his team will be working hard about spending all that money,Womens Landon Collins Jersey, which at about $90 million available represents by far the most in the league heading into free agency.

we’ll be very active.”,“It will be interesting to see which players we can potentially line up first for initial visits, Womens Michael Thomas Jersey,I should say,” Maccagnan said. “Obviously we’ll be very active on the first day in terms of the higher profile guys. I think the one thing I’ve noticed in the NFL this year or in the past years, is free agency moves very quickly. If you have guys targeted and you have your range how you value them

and so the Jets should touch base with Brees’s agent as soon as they’re allowed to tomorrow.,Womens Odell Beckham Jr Jersey,Everyone is looking at whether the Jets will make a huge offer to quarterback Kirk Cousins,Authentic Lawrence Taylor Jersey,if Brees and the Saints don’t come to a deal today. Everyone expects Brees to remain in New Orleans, but they should also be preparing to call Drew Brees‘s agent tomorrow, Authentic Odell Beckham Jr Jersey, but the two sides haven’t reached a deal yet

Maccagnan can’t name any names just yet.

“We may sign a big-ticket guy. We may sign a small-ticket guy. It will be very interesting to see how it plays out,Authentic Landon Collins Jersey, ” he said. “Everybody is well aware we have quite a bit of cap space to work with. There are quite a few players we’re interested in.”

If the Jets aren’t a much better team a week from today than they are now,Authentic Michael Thomas Jersey, that would be a major disappointment.

The Cleveland Browns went for broke on Friday, engineering a trio of trades to bring in three-time Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry from the Miami Dolphins,Authentic Aaron Rodgers Jersey, quarterback Tyrod Taylor from the Buffalo Bills and cornerback Damarious Randall from the Green Bay Packers.

The trades can't be formally announced until Wednesday, but the Browns' stalwart offensive tackle Joe Thomas didn't let that stop him from giving his review of the moves.

Whether he joins them on the field next season remains to be seen. The 10-time Pro Bowl selection reportedly told ESPN in an email his "decision will be based purely on my health."

Thomas missed games for the first time in his pro career last season after suffering a torn left triceps tendon in Week 7. He had played an NFL-record 10,Womens Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Jersey,363 consecutive snaps before the injury,Womens Andrew Luck Jersey, making 167 straight starts dating back to his first game as a rookie.

Thomas posted an "emergency" episode of his ThomaHawk podcast on Saturday,Womens T.Y. Hilton Jersey, and gave the team high marks for the acquisitions, just hours before his brother's wedding,Womens Leonard Fournette Jersey, especially for Taylor.

"I hate when people make comparisons, it's time for a comparison. (Taylor) reminds me a little bit of Russell Wilson, but with that being said, (who) throws an incredible deep ball, be able to make plays, extend plays with his feet, one of the best in the game. (Taylor can) operate an offense and run it efficiently, make a lot of great decisions when he's in the pocket," Thomas said on his podcast, according to Cleveland.com.

"I said that the Browns should be trading for Tyrod Taylor. Many weeks ago I thought he was the most underrated player that might be available at quarterback and lo and behold it seems like John Dorsey must be a big ThomaHawk fan."

The 28-year-old Taylor passed for 2,799 yards,Womens Aaron Rodgers Jersey, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions last season. He had been Buffalo's starter for the majority of the past three seasons and threw for 8,857 yards,Authentic Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Jersey, 51 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while also rushing for 14 touchdowns in that time.

Cleveland is sending a third-round pick (No. 65 overall) to the Bills for Taylor.

He also seemed excited about Landry's potential impact on the offense.

"You pair (Landry) with Corey Coleman and then a deep threat like Josh Gordon,Authentic Andrew Luck Jersey, that offense all of a sudden got really much more dangerous,Authentic T.Y. Hilton Jersey," Thomas said.

Cleveland reportedly gave up two draft picks -- a fourth-rounder in the 2018 draft and a seventh-round pick in 2019 -- for Landry,Authentic Leonard Fournette Jersey, the first player to catch 400 passes over his first four NFL seasons.

Landry, 25, reportedly signed his franchise tag with the Dolphins on Thursday and is slated to earn about $16 million this season unless the Browns work toward a long-term contract. The two sides are discussing a new contract, and a deal is expected to be reached, according to ESPN.

"Bringing in a guy like Damarious Randall, who maybe had a little bit of a checkered past with some character problems, locker-room problems in Green Bay, Hue (Jackson) is exactly the right coach to have to be able to help that player blossom into the type of player he can be based on his potential and the talent level,'' Thomas said of the team's move on the defensive side.

Randall, intercepted four passes last season and has nabbed 10 in three NFL campaigns. He has returned two for scores, 25, one in 2015 and one last season.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Mark Gastineau made an emotional plea to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to help him and former players who are dealing with what he claims are football-related health issues.

Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease,The former New York Jets star said during a radio interview on 710 WOR Radio in New York that aired Thursday night that he wants ailing players to be taken care of by the NFL. The 61-year-old Gastineau announced last year that he was diagnosed with dementia, and believes the conditions are the result of brain trauma from playing in the NFL for 10 seasons.

"I want the NFL to treat people right,Womens Cam Newton Jersey," Gastineau said during the interview. "They've got to. They have to."

Gastineau said Goodell told him when they talked at a Jets game over a year ago that he should let him know if he needs anything.

he said,Authentic Mitchell Trubiskyn Jersey, 'Listen, Mark,Authentic Walter Payton Jersey, you know what? You need anything,Authentic Jordan Howard Jersey, let me know,'" Gastineau told host Pete McCarthy. "He was my ball boy. I treated him great. He told me. ... Hey,"The Commissioner told me, Roger Goodell, treat people right."

An NFL spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment on Gastineau's statements.

Gastineau is the Jets' career sacks leader and was one of the NFL's most recognizable stars because of his entertaining dances after taking down quarterbacks for New York from 1979-88. He and Goodell have known each other since the early 1980s, when Goodell interned in the Jets' public relations department.

Roger Goodell,Womens Jordan Howard Jersey, " Gastineau said. "You said,"I want to hold you to your promise, 'Anything I need! I want the players to be treated right."

who was joined by his wife JoAnn and lawyer Jason Luckasevic,Gastineau,Authentic Luke Kuechly Jersey,  began to cry during the interview when he spoke of his daily struggles to get out of bed and remember people's names.

" he said. "My wife,Authentic Cam Newton Jersey, she and I used to go around and do yard work,Womens Luke Kuechly Jersey,"My brain isn't the same,Womens Mitchell Trubiskyn Jersey," Gastineau said while crying. "But you know what? She does everything now for me. ... It's not good,Womens Walter Payton Jersey,it's not good.

I did. But you know what? I was nothing. You know why? Because of what happened to me.","When I'm laying in bed until 3, it's not good. There will be days I get up and I'm good. ... My wife will tell you, 4 or 5 (p.m.), she helps me get out of bed ... and she'll help me remember names. I used to think I was all that

but approved it in October after eight months. She said the NFL sent a notice to Luckasevic 30 days later saying it was appealing the settlement again for Gastineau's Parkinson's diagnosis.,Gastineau, dabbled in boxing after retiring from football and had 17 professional fights. He is a plaintiff in the concussion lawsuit against the NFL, who said he routinely cracked his and other players' helmets during big hits in practices and games, but has not received any money as a result. JoAnn Gastineau said NFL doctors questioned her husband's dementia diagnosis

"The NFL is wrong," Gastineau said. "The NFL is wrong, they're wrong. I'm not telling them to give me zillions of dollars. I don't want zillions of dollars. I just want to be treated with respect."

CALGARY,adidas Cory Schneider jersey, Alberta (AP) -- Mike Smith made 28 saves, adidas Travis Hamonic jersey, Johnny Gaudreau scored in the second period and the Calgary Flames edged the Edmonton Oilers 1-0 on Tuesday night to end a seven-game losing streak against their provincial rival.

It was a superb bounce-back performance for Smith in his second game after missing a month with a lower-body injury. Smith was beaten four times on 26 shots in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the New York Islanders.

Calgary (35-26-10) is two points behind Dallas and Colorado, adidas John Tavares jersey, who occupy the two wild-card spots in the Western Conference. The Flames began the night three points back of Los Angeles for third place in the Pacific Division.

Cam Talbot made 31 saves as Edmonton (30-35-4) had its three-game winning streak snapped.

The most dangerous Oilers player all night was Connor McDavid, authentic Cory Schneider jersey, who entered on a seven-game point streak (six goals, seven assists) and with 18 goals in his last 19 games. But despite a team-high five shots and several other setups, McDavid could not solve Smith.

Early in the third, authentic Travis Hamonic jersey, Smith acrobatically kicked out his pad to rob Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on a one-timer after he was set up perfectly by McDavid. On that same shift, adida Taylor Hall jersey, McDavid swooped in alone on Smith, authentic Taylor Hall jersey, only to be denied by the 35-year-old goalie.

Smith also made a highlight-reel stop late in the second to preserve the one-goal margin, adidas Ryan McDonagh jersey, getting his arm on a shot from Ryan Strome after a bad bounce resulted in the Edmonton center having the puck alone in front.

Calgary scored at 5:18 of the second when Sean Monahan's pass found Gaudreau alone in front and he zipped a backhand over Talbot's shoulder.

Gaudreau's 22nd goal of the season extended his point streak to five games (two goals, authentic Ryan McDonagh jersey, five assists).

Edmonton thought it took a 1-0 lead at 14:05 of the first when Zack Kassian banged in a puck that was partially covered under Smith, but the goal was waved off immediately because the whistle had blown.

NOTES: Calgary made two lineup changes at forward, authentic John Tavares jersey,  with Drew Shore and Chris Stewart inserted for Matthew Tkachuk (upper body) and Mark Jankowski (coach's decision). ... Kris Versteeg (hip) missed his 49th game for the Flames but is nearing a return and could play as soon as Friday. ... Ex-Flame Mike Cammalleri, who played in career game No. 900, has gone 30 games without a goal.
